At the same time, one of the richest, most consistent sources of calcium carbonate is thrown away every day: eggshell. Egg processors generate enormous volumes of shell waste as a byproduct of liquid egg production, most of which is simply hauled to a landfill at a cost. Raw eggshell can’t be substituted in as-is, however — unprocessed shell carries residual moisture, organic membrane, and bacterial risk, making it unsuitable for use in formulations without further processing to stabilize and purify it.
